Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has been detained for seven more days as Nakuru court allows police to first complete investigations before charging the lawmaker.

Nakuru Chief Magistrate Josphat Kalo on Wednesday, September 16, ordered the MP detained at the Nakuru Central Police Station where has been since he was airlifted from Uasin Gishu County over the weekend.

Before the ruling, a team of 12 advocates led by Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei, her Elgeyo-Marakwet counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen, Hillary Sigei and Isaac Terer put up a spirited fight to convince the court to have the MP released on bail.

But after the ruling, Shollei said that Sudi’s legal team will file an application at the High Court immediately for review of the detention orders.

Huge crowd

Expecting a huge crowd, police beefed security outside the law courts to maintain order as several political leaders trooped to Nakuru, among them the local senator Susan Kihika, MPs Caleb Kositany (Soy) and Aisha Jumwa (Malindi), and Wangui Ngirici (Kirinyaga Woman Rep).

On Monday, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) through their investigating officer had sought to detain Sudi for 14 days.

NCIC plans to charge Sudi with five counts, including incitement, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and assaulting a police officer.

The MP is in trouble over utterances he made against President Uhuru Kenyatta and members of the First Family.

The utterances were shared in the form of video on social media platforms where they were circulated widely, attracting nationwide condemnation from the political class and common mwananchi.
