Close to 200 tenants in Pangani Estate, Nairobi, braved the July cold on Monday night after bulldozers forcefully kicked them out of their houses in escalating row with the county.

The tenants have been rowing with the Nairobi County government which plans to upgrade six city estates, starting with Pangani Estate.

Residents had to scamper to safety after City Hall bulldozers descended on their houses as early as 11:30pm on Monday.

“This is a betrayal is the highest order. We were not given any eviction notice,” George Kimani, the estate chairman, said.

With temperatures running as low as 14 celcius degrees on Tuesday morning, the residents — who have opposed the regeneration plan — endured a chilly night.

When K24 Digital visited the area on Tuesday morning, the affected residents were packing their belongings in readiness for relocation.
