Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has arrived at the Mumias Police Station in Kakamega County following his arrest earlier in Nairobi.
According to the charge sheet seen by K24 Digital, police plan to charge him with engaging in a prohibited gathering.
“On the 16th day of August 2020 at around 1430 hrs at Bomani Grounds in Mumias West Sub County within Kakamega County, jointly with others not before court engaged in a prohibited gathering during the restricted period by engaging in a public baraza,” the police charge sheet reads.
The vehicles that whisked the senator from Nairobi following his arrest midday arrived at the Mumias Police Station at about 10:30 pm.
Malala was arrested after a 10-hour standoff with the police in which he holed himself up in his house in Kitengela, Kajiado County, refusing calls from police to surrender himself.
Eventually, he surrendered to the police in the company of his lawyer.
Drama shortly ensued after a group of senators turned up at his home demanding to secure him from police, to escort him to record a statement.
However, the senators were rebuffed by the detectives who had barricaded the estate’s gate with handcuffs.
