Chibanzi Mwachonda, the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) Secretary-General, has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement dated Friday, July 31, Dr. Mwachonda said he contracted coronavirus “while dispensing my official duties”.

“I am currently in a stable condition and under self-isolation. My family is safe, contact tracing and testing of all close contacts is ongoing,” said Dr. Mwachonda in his Friday press statement.

The KMPDU top official has urged the Government to “provide utmost support to its frontline soldiers (healthcare workers) by providing adequate and quality PPEs and unveil the welfare package on work injury benefits and comprehensive medical treatment”.

As of July 15, 429 healthcare workers in Kenya had tested positive for coronavirus disease, with a death confirmed.

On Thursday, July 30, Kenya’s COVID-19 caseload stood at 19,913, out of which, 8,121 patients recovered from the contagion, whereas 325 succumbed to the disease.
