More than 60 percent of applicants who turned up for the second phase of Kazi Mtaani in Bondo, Siaya County are women, acting Deputy County Commissioner Michael Too has revealed.

Too disclosed that out of the 700 applications received by chiefs, 420 were female, an indication they were more willing to work than their male counterparts.

The Kazi Mtaani initiative was launched by the government to engage youth below 35 years in health clean-ups where they could also earn stipends to cushion them from the adverse effects of COVID-19 pandemic.

The acting DCC expressed confidence in the recruitment process, terming it free and fair.

He revealed that 516 youth would be considered for the jobs in the sub-county where they would earn a wage of Sh450 daily.

Kazi Mtaani phase two allocated Bondo sub-county 516 slots broken down as 500 workers and 16 supervisors. We noticed some older applicants whom we won’t consider,” Too said.

He also revealed that those who are successful would be registered electronically before commencing their work on Monday next week.

The Kazi Mtaani programme will last for six and a half months, with two teams alternating in one location each working for eleven days each every month.

In Bondo sub-county, Bondo and Usenge towns have been identified as the two urban centers where the project would be taking place.

In Usenge, the project will majorly dwell on the clean-up process targeting Usenge market and the beaches around such as Uhanya, Nambo and Honge.

Since it is a national hygiene programme, workers will mostly be involved in garbage collection, cutting grass and unblocking sewer lines.

Too urged the area residents to cooperate with the workers whenever they were around their dwellings or business premises by helping them to identify places that needed to be worked on.
