Kitui ward representatives have denied claims that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka sponsored their motion of impeachment against Governor Charity Ngilu.
Their comments come amidst claims by the county chief that the former vice-president was behind the campaign to have her removed.
On Tuesday, June 23, Kitui County Assembly Majority Leader Peter Kilonzo who is the mover of the motion warned Ngilu against invoking Kalonzo’s name in ‘self- inflicted woes.’
Ngilu has accused Musyoka and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua of sponsoring the impeachment motion.
“That is fake propaganda. Neither Kalonzo Musyoka nor Senator Wambua have told Ngilu not to provide water and drugs to Kitui residents,” said Kilonzo.
Wiper Party enjoys a majority of 28 out of the 54 members in the assembly.
An impeachment motion requires two-thirds of the House to sail through.
Forty ward representatives signed the Ngilu motion.
According to the Majority Leader, the motion enjoys the support of MCAs from other parties.
“Ask yourself if I need two-thirds of the 54 members how many do I need from other parties. I only need eight more. If it was Wiper with only 28 members they would defeat it,” said Kilonzo in an interview with People Daily.
He further revealed that he had met a group of religious leaders led by retired Anglican of Church of Kenya (ACK) Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi who were keen to mediate the conflict.
He claimed Ngilu had misled the clergy.
“They had been given a different story from what I told them. I advised them to get the correct information before we agree to meet Ngilu,” said Kilonzo.
“I don’t mind meeting Ngilu and I don’t hate her in any way. But I hate what she does,” said Kilonzo.
Ngilu is said to have reached out to her close ally, Deputy Speaker Kasee Musya to persuade some MCAs to shoot down the motion on a technicality.
Musya, a Wiper Party rebel, did not sign in support of the motion.
He did not even attend a weekend meeting in Mwingi to firm up the ouster bid.
On Tuesday, members of the public were notified through a gazette notice of the impeachment motion that is set for Monday next week
