Residents of Wanyororo B in Bahati, Nakuru County have accused a local contractor of shoddy work after a water tank burst less than a month after its construction.

According to the residents, the 100,000-cubic liter tank collapsed on Sunday morning at around 5 am, destroying nearby crops and homes.

The project which cost Sh 1.7 million was to be officially commissioned next week and handed over to the locals who have been grappling with perennial water shortages.

Kandutura Limited, the company that built the tank, is linked to a former ward representative.

One of the locals, Mary Wairimu, said she heard a loud tremor and big bang that roused her household members from sleep.

She noted that the incident terrified locals, saying that even though no life was lost, the incident should be a wake-up call for project inspectors.

Another resident, Julius Muriuri, said the tank did not have a pillar.

He said that the incident comes barely days after a pit latrine collapsed in Subukia sub-county ahead of launch.

On his part, the Bahati MCA John Ndonyo demanded necessary action taken on contractors accused of shoddy workmanship.
