The national government has ordered, effective today, the closure of Eastleigh and Old Town markets in Nairobi and Mombasa counties respectively.

This is after Kenya recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases confirmed in a single day, with the majority, 33, from Mombasa County.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said that 47 new Covid-19 samples tested positive in the last 24 hours, pushing total infections in the country to 582.

CS Kagwe also ordered cessation of movement and closure of all eateries in Mombasa’s Old Town where the residents will undergo forced testing as earlier announced by Interior CS Fred Matiangi.

Further, Mutahi said that effective Wednesday, May 6, the national government will bear the cost of targeted testing and quarantine facilities.
