Kiambu Governor James Nyoro on Monday said that 2,200 people have had their body temperatures checked since the government mounted 22 roadblocks on various county roads.
Dr. Nyoro said that only two cases of people with high temperatures were recorded with the duo taken to their homes for mandatory 14 days quarantine.
“One should not panic when their temperature is way above the normal body temperature of 37 degrees because it doesn’t mean they have COVID-19. The common cold, fever and flu are still there as well as malaria,” the Kiambu governor said.
Dr. Nyoro said that his administration will give imprests to medical personnel who are handling COVID-19 cases.
The governor said that the county has 60 COVID-19 isolation beds in its level three hospitals and have identified several schools as coronavirus treatment centres.
“We have Alliance, Kiambu and Thika high schools among the institutions where we can take patients for quarantine. We also have St Paul’s, Mount Kenya and Kenyatta universities which are ready to accommodate medical personnel,” said Dr. Nyoro.
The governor cautioned local residents against taking the deadly COVID-19 lightly adding that his government had already started distributing free face masks and sanitizers.
He said that it was both unfortunate to see Kiambu residents ignoring social distancing rules.
“As I was going to open the new Limuru market, I found people crowding as they went on with their businesses. That is very catastrophic and am beseeching our people not to take this malady for granted,” Dr. Nyoro warned.
The Kiambu chief said that only two positive COVID-19 cases had been reported in the county.
The governor said that all the markets that had been temporarily closed had been reopened after fumigation.
Among the markets that were reopened is the popular fresh farm produce Soko Mjinga along the Nairobi/ Nakuru highway, Makongeni market in Thika and Wangige market in Kabete.
