Kenya Met warns of more rainfall in 7-day weather forecast

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans to brace themselves for more rainfall during the first half of this week.

In a seven-day weather forecast issued on Monday, January 27, 2025, the Director of Meteorological Services, David Gikungu, said that the rainfall is expected to continue over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the southeastern lowlands.

Spread of rainfall

These are the areas of Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, and Homabay, and Migori and
Narok counties.

Morning rains are expected over a few places, with afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms likely to occur over a few places, occasionally spreading to several places.

However, most parts of the Coast, northeastern, and northwestern Kenya are likely to be generally sunny and dry, with average daytime (maximum) temperatures of more than 30°C.

Average nighttime (minimum) temperatures will be less than 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley as well as in the North and Central Rift Valley.

“Rainfall is expected to continue over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the southeastern lowlands during the first half of the forecast period. Most parts of the Coast, northeastern, and northwestern Kenya are likely to be generally sunny and dry. Average daytime (maximum) temperatures of more than 30°C will be experienced in the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya. Average nighttime (minimum) temperatures will be less than 10°C in some parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley as well as in the North and Central Rift Valley,” Gikungu said.

Sunny intervals are expected in northwestern Kenya (Turkana and Samburu Counties) during the day while nights are likely to be partly cloudy.

However, morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms may occur over a few places during the first half of the forecast period.

Nairobi weather

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi Counties), morning rains are expected over a few places.

Afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur over a few places, occasionally spreading to several places during the first half of the forecast period.

Sunny intervals are expected during the day while nights are likely to be partly cloudy in northeastern Kenya (Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo Counties).

In the southeastern lowlands (Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta Counties, as well as the inland parts of Tana-River County), morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places during the first half of the forecast period.
