Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has promised to attend court sessions to answer abduction queries when ready.
Speaking in Kwale County on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, where he opened the annual Administration Police Service Senior Commanders’ conference, IG Kanja told a section of the press that he was committed to giving a full report in court when fully briefed.
“Hakuna shida yoyote na wakati wa kufika kortini, nitafika mimi mwenyewe binafsi and nitasema hio maneno vile nimesema hapa (There is no problem and at the right time, I present myself in court where I will say everything I have told you (journalists) here),” the police boss stated.
IG Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohammed Amin failed to honour their third court summons on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The security bosses were set to appear before Justice Chacha Mwita at the High Court in Nairobi to address inquiries regarding the whereabouts of four individuals reported abducted in Mlolongo.
The four have been missing for close to a month after they went missing on December 16, 2024, and December 17, 2024, with their families insisting that they were abducted.
Following their families’ cry, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) moved to court demanding the immediate release of the four.
However, IG Kanja and the DCI boss are yet to appear in court regarding the matter.
Update on abduction probe
At the same time, IG Kanja assured the country and police in collaboration with DCI officers had launched a probe into the spate of abductions in the country.
He maintained that he had personally ordered the respective officers to expedite the probe and bring the perpetrators to book.
“The investigations are at an advanced level in all reported cases of missing persons. I have instructed that those investigations should be conducted thoroughly to a conclusion. Any person found responsible for the actions will be arrested and presented in court to be prosecuted in line with our laws,” Kanja insisted.
“We will inform you if we make any arrests but I want to assure you that we are doing everything possible regarding those serious investigations,” he asserted.
His sentiments come days after President William Ruto noted that the police was an independent organ and needed to carry out the probe and furnish Kenyans with information regarding the recent series of abductions.
