Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has criticized individuals attacking President William Ruto’s administration, accusing them of selective outrage and tribal bias.

Taking to his X account on Thursday, January 16, 2025, the lawmaker defended the president against what he termed as unfair criticism.

According to Kaluma, many of those now vocal against the government remained silent or supported corruption and other injustices during previous regimes.

He questioned the motives behind their criticisms, suggesting they stem from tribal affiliations rather than genuine concerns for the country’s progress.

The noise directed at President @WilliamsRuto barely two years into his first term in office by tribalists who remained mute or cheered corruption and atrocities by past regimes led by people from their tribes – weeh!” Kaluma wrote.

He further noted that the current criticism paints an unrealistic picture of Kenya’s past leadership, noting that one would think previous administrations were flawless and free from economic or governance challenges.

“You may be forgiven to think Kenya had angels for Presidents before Ruto and it was all bliss here – no debts, no corruption, no taxation, no atrocities!” he added.

This would not be the first time the ODM lawmaker has thrown his weight behind President Ruto. In December 2024, he criticised Kenyans condemning the Head of State’s leadership, stating he would not support their animosity towards the president.

Kaluma argued that most critics were Ruto’s voters now dissatisfied due to unmet demands for excluding other Kenyans.

“Your enemy does not have to be our enemy. We will not help you to hate the leader you voted for simply because he has refused to accept your condition that he must exclude and discriminate against fellow Kenyans from public service and national resources. The government of Kenya is big enough for all of us. Tufinyane ndani kwa pole,” Kaluma declared.

Kaluma’s defence for Ruto followed ODM’s shift towards a broad-based government led by Raila Odinga.

Kaluma on Ruto’s re-election

On January 4, 2025, The legislator shared his perspective on the upcoming 2027 General Election predicting President Ruto’s re-election if former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is currently pursuing the position of African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson, does not contest the presidency.

According to the outspoken MP, Ruto is likely to secure significant support from Raila’s traditional strongholds if the opposition leader opts out of the race.

“I have been to Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley, North Eastern, Coast, Eastern, Central, and back to Nairobi this Christmas season. I can now report that President @WilliamsRuto will be re-elected in 2027, except if Baba @RailaOdinga runs.

“Kenyans from Nyanza, Western, Rift Valley, North Eastern, Coast, Eastern, and Nairobi, who are 80% of Kenya’s population, will vote for Ruto if Raila does not run, to diminish tribal hegemony and entitlement by Kikuyus and to remind them that Kenya is far bigger than Mt. Kenya,” Kaluma stated.

The MP urged President Ruto to heed the concerns of Kenyans by ensuring fairness in public service appointments and equitable distribution of resources across the country.

“President Ruto must now listen. He must deliberately ensure equitable sharing of national resources and public service appointments across Kenya and secure affirmative action to regions which have been left out since independence,” he emphasized.
