President William Ruto has promised to build schience complexes at Lenana, State House Girls and Jamhuri High schools.

Ruto made the promise on Sunday, January 12, 2025, after inspecting the ongoing construction of a science complex, two dormitories and eight classrooms at Nairobi School.

He said the complexes will enable the schools enroll more students, including from Nairobi County.

“We are overseeing reforms in our schools to fill existing gaps and ensure that performance improves. Our goal is to give our children the opportunity to be the best that they can be in the society, and to contribute to the transformation of Kenya,” Ruto stated.

“Inspected the ongoing construction of a Science Complex, two dormitories and eight classrooms at Nairobi School. We are also building similar facilities at Lenana, State House Girls and Jamhuri High schools so that they can enrol more students, including from Nairobi County.”

Shortage of classrooms

Ruto’s promise comes despite a failed promise by the government to build over 16,000 new classrooms for Grade 9 students in January 2025. However, only 13,500 were ready by the start of the school year.

This left a shortage of 2,500 classrooms. Some primary schools, which are hosting junior secondary schools, reported overcrowded classrooms, a lack of desks, and a shortage of teachers.

On the other hand, secondary schools are operating with empty classrooms for Form One, as Class 8 learners transitioned to Grade Nine instead of Form One.
