Media personality and author Janet Mbugua is celebrating her birthday and she has shared a heartfelt message addressing the state of the nation.

In a video shared on her Instagram page on Sunday, January 12, 2024, the veteran journalist used the occasion to shed light on the issues facing Kenya, expressing her wish for a country free from abductions, corruption, and insecurity.

She made an emotional appeal for a better Kenya, emphasizing that her sentiments were not for show but were driven by genuine concern.

Janet lamented the return of oppressive tactics such as abductions, intimidation, and fear, which she noted have created an atmosphere of unrest.

She called on Kenyans to take action and use their talents to advocate for change, whether through art, social media, education, or other forms of activism.

“It’s my birthday today, and there is a lot to celebrate, but I wanted to light a candle and make a wish for Kenya. It’s in no way supposed to be artistic or corny, but this has been weighing on me. We can look around at the state of the nation,” Janet expressed.

Adding;

“This is a call to action for the world. Tactics that worked decades ago don’t have room anymore, but you find some leaders reviving those tactics—tactics like abductions, intimidations, gaslighting and fear. That’s why people have been speaking up despite the fear.”

Janet Mbugua’s wishes

She said that she wished for a government that genuinely cares for its people, a country that fosters opportunity and growth rather than survival, and an end to the systemic issues holding the nation back.

“I want a Kenya that prioritizes service delivery and not insecurity. A Kenya that allows people to achieve their biggest dreams and doesn’t stifle talent. A Kenya that addresses healthcare, ensures girls are safe, and eliminates corruption and destruction,” she lamented.

The global speaker also honoured those affected by the country’s ongoing challenges. She lit candles for victims of femicide, those who died during protests, and the many activists and citizens who have disappeared or been abducted in recent times.

“I want to light candles today for those who are not here today, a candle for femicide cases, a candle for those who died during protests and a candle for those who were abducted and are still missing and some who are dead, ” Janet stated.

Her remarks come amid growing concerns over enforced disappearances of youth activists and rising cases of femicide in Kenya. Social media users and activists who criticize governance have increasingly faced intimidation.
