President William Ruto has made key changes in his cabinet ahead of the vetting of three of his cabinet nominees on January 14, 2025.
In a statement on Saturday, December 28, 2024, Ruto assigned vacant cabinet dockets to various serving cabinet secretaries pending the assumption of office by the newly nominated CSs.
“Following the changes effected within Cabinet on December 19, 2024, and as the Cabinet Secretary nominees undergo the requisite parliamentary approval process, His Excellency the President has assigned acting Cabinet Secretaries to the vacant ministerial portfolios,” the statement read in part.
“In that regard, it is notified that the Head of State and Government has pursuant to Article 152(5)(a) of the Constitution, assigned the vacant ministerial portfolios to the following Cabinet Secretaries in an acting capacity, as stated:”
Acting capacity
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi will hold the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Digital Economy in an acting capacity pending the approval of nominee William Kabogo’s approval vetting for the capacity.
Similarly, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale will also hold the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development in an acting capacity following the transfer of former Agriculture CS Andrew Karanja to head the embassy of Brazil.
Ruto’s changes
His docket is set to be under the leadership of former Health Cabinet Secretary in the Uhuru regime Mutahi Kagwe whose vetting date has been set for January 14, 2025.
Additionally, Sports CS Salim Mvurya will be acting in the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry following his reshuffle to head the Sports and Youth docket.
Ruto’s nominee for the position Lee Kinyanjui- a former Nakuru County Governor is expected to replace Mvurya in the docket.
This comes after Ruto made changes in his cabinet following a meeting with former president Uhuru Kenyatta in his Ichaweri home in Gatundu.
Several allies of the former president were included in Ruto’s administration, just months after he fell out with his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
