Kenya’s African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship candidate Raila Odinga has condoled with the victims of an attack in Magdeburg, Germany.
Taking to his official X account on Sunday, December 22, 2024, Raila also condemned the incident that has tragically claimed five lives and left over 200 injured.
“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the senseless attack in Magdeburg, Germany, which has tragically claimed five lives and left over 200 injured,” Raila stated.

The former Prime Minister further stated that Magdeburg holds a special place in his heart since it was the backdrop to his journey as a Mechanical Engineering student in Germany.
“Magdeburg holds a special place in my heart; it’s not just a beautiful city, but also the backdrop to my journey as a Mechanical Engineering student. My thoughts and prayers are with all who have lost loved ones in this heartbreaking event. May they find solace in this season of goodwill and compassion,” Raila said.
Raila went ahead to state that the world would be a safer and more harmonious place if people could embrace their differences, foster tolerance for divergent views, and truly learn to coexist in peace with one another.
“In times like these, it’s clear that our world would be a safer, more harmonious place if we could embrace our differences, foster tolerance for divergent views, and truly learn to coexist in peace with one another. Let us strive for understanding and unity in the face of adversity,” Raila stated.

Magdeburg attack
A nine-year-old child and four adults have been killed after a car drove into a crowd at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg.
More than 200 people were injured – at least 41 critically – in the attack that occurred on Friday evening.
A black BMW SUV ploughed 400 metres through the crowded market in an attack that lasted about three minutes.
The suspect has been named in local media as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old Saudi citizen who arrived in Germany in 2006 and had worked as a doctor.
Al-Abdulmohsen is currently being questioned and prosecutors expect to charge him with murder and attempted murder in due course.
