Former Defence Cabinet Secretary and Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has suggested that pooling resources for low-budget mass weddings could be a practical solution to the financial strain many families are experiencing under President William Ruto’s administration.
Wamalwa shared his thoughts in a statement on Saturday, December 21, 2024, through his X account after attending events in Trans Nzoia and Vihiga counties.
The opposition leader emphasized that the festive season offers a perfect opportunity to reflect on family values and celebrate significant life transitions.
“This festive season, apart from celebrating Christmas, is also a time for families to get together as they witness their children transitioning from boyhood to adulthood and a celebration of love as couples tie the knot,” he said.
Wamalwa attended Marvin Masanja’s traditional “khwalukha” ceremony in Trans Nzoia and an inter-denominational mass wedding in Vihiga County hosted by aspiring governor Alex Kidake.
Drawing from these experiences, he suggested that the idea of mass weddings could help families struggling with the high costs associated with individual ceremonies.
“With many families facing hard Rutonoconomic times, the idea of pooling and low-budget mass weddings might be an idea whose time has come,” he added.
