Musician Julliet Miriam Ayub popularly known as Jovial has weighed in on the ongoing discourse over splitting finances with partners.

While responding to a fan who had questioned her stance on the issue following content creator Alma Mutheu’s recent revelation that she has been financially supporting her boyfriend for the last two years, Jovial stated that she was okay with sharing her finances with her man.

She also noted that she would rather have her man ask her for money than borrowing from friends who would later chastise their financial situation.

“How do you handle finances with your partner since you two are not officially married,” one of her followers questioned during the Q&A session.

Sisi tuko sawa hatuanikani! Mambo ya aibu aibu hatupendi! Tubaheshimiana! Chake ni chetu change ni chetu pia. Mimi sasa heri mwanaume wangu aniombe mimi kuliko marafiki zake wajue tumesota! Tukipatana na watu si tuko sawa,” she responded.

The discourse on splitting bills between partners took centre stage for the better part of the week following Alma’s revelation.

Speaking during an interview with a local YouTuber, Alma confronted her partner Gift Muziq saying she was fed up with always handling household responsibilities.

“It gets to a certain point as a woman where you get tired of doing everything. It is fine, not everybody is capable, but you cannot stay with a person for a very long time, say three or two years, and you are still providing everything as a woman. Even if it is providing half, that is providing,” she said.

“Why am I still paying rent, fueling the car and meeting every other responsibility? Gift Muziq has the ability to level up but he has to be pushed,” she added.

Quarters including local celebrities weighed in on the topic with some agreeing and others disagreeing with Alma.

Recently, comedian Dr Ofweneke shared his thoughts on the issue saying splitting bills often leads to break-ups.

“Men of this generation stop this nonsense of 50/50, 50/50 will break your relationship or your marriage if you are not one hundred per cent financially stable to take care of your wife, family my brother then do not marry, 50/50 you are giving women the power to feel that everything in that marriage is equal.

“When you allow your woman to do 50/50 she will even come home as you do because it is 50/50, she will talk to you the way she wants because it is 50/50 wachaneni na pesa ya wanawake, pesa ya mwanamke ni sumu wachana nayo,” Dr Ofweneke said.

He also stated that Alma’s concerns were justifiable as women were created to be taken care of.

“I need men of this generation to understand that women were not born to take care of themselves they were born to be taken care of, mwanamke ni wa kuchungewa sio wakujichunga that’s why when a woman takes care of something in the house she will shout on top of the mountain because it is a surprise, it is a big deal to her when she buys dinner because she is not supposed to a man will never brag ati amelipa rent, amenunua chakula ama anunua nguo because it is his responsibility and it is not a surprise but when a woman does something she is not supposed to she will shout because it is not in her nature,” he added.
