Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has called for a fresh era of political leadership, urging the nation to break free from leaders who serve foreign and personal interests.

Mutunga, a founding member of the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), said this in a video shared by KHRC on Saturday, December 7, 2024, as the organization celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Speaking about the state of Kenya’s politics, Mutunga criticized both government and opposition leaders for serving external interests at the expense of ordinary citizens. He emphasized the need for a transformative movement to steer the country away from such influences.

“We are knee-deep in search of an alternative political leadership that will liberate Kenyans from the rules of compradors in government and in the opposition who have become running dogs of imperialism. The compradors must go! Mapambano ya mapinduzi yaendelee,” Mutunga declared.

The former CJ also lauded the role of KHRC in defending human rights and championing activism over the past three decades. He highlighted the organization’s unwavering commitment to marginalized communities and its efforts in advocating for inclusivity.

“It is a great revolutionary sign that we are celebrating KHRC at 30. We also celebrate the Gen Z mass action. KHRC has been part of my life since 1991; I have been one of the founding members. I have seen KHRC build solidarity with our grassroots with global comrades,” he said.

Mutunga noted KHRC’s relevance in promoting human rights and bringing global unity. He highlighted the organization’s contributions to equality, particularly through its advocacy for LGBTQ rights, which he said remains a contentious issue in Kenya.

“We remain relevant in the human rights movement over centuries that will be known as a century of solidarity between global citizens in overthrowing the status quo on this planet,” Mutunga stated.

Adding;

“In our activism, we have defended material interests and the rights of all Kenyans, particularly the marginalized groups. And I am particularly proud of our support and protection of the rights of the LGBTQ community over the years.”
