The High Court on Monday ordered the Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to restrain his officers from using unreasonable force during the enforcement of the 7 pm- 5 am curfew.

Justice Weldon Korir also ordered IG Mutyambai to publish within 48 hours guidelines to be observed by police officers during the state curfew enforcement.

Further, the court barred the police from interfering with media coverage of the state curfew enforcement.

The orders were issued after the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) moved to court in a certificate of urgency to stop police from brutalising Kenyans while enforcing the curfew.

LSK’s concerns came amid the death of a boda boda rider whose family claimed he was beaten up by police officers on Friday, March 27.

There also had been widespread condemnation of the manner in which police officers brutalised Kenyans on the first day of curfew enforcement.

On Sunday night, two journalists were seized in Eldoret while covering the curfew enforcement at Langas Estate where some residents had defied police orders to remain indoors.

LSK also wants the curfew starting hours pushed by three hours to 10 pm.
