The number of coronavirus cases in Kenya has risen to 50, after eight people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

The new cases were reported in Nairobi (6), Kitui (1) and Mombasa (1).

Nairobi County is now leading with 34 cases while Kilifi has six, Mombasa three. Kwale, Kilifi and Kitui counties have one coronavirus case each.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the country has over 20,000 testing kits.

Further, 20 secondary boarding schools have been identified as potential isolation centres should coronavirus cases spiral out of control.

Coronavirus projection

The Health ministry has projected that the country will have 1,000 cases by the first week of April and about 10,000 cases by the end of the month.

CS Kagwe said the disease is no longer imported, meaning that it is being transmitted locally.

As such, one of the first measures to curb the further spread of the virus, CS Kagwe ordered that boda boda operators to only carry one passenger.

“The boda boda rider and passenger must both wear masks. We expect boda boda association leaders to enforce this direct,” said Mr. Kagwe.

The national government is set to kick off the distribution of masks in counties to aid in the implementation of its new measures to stop the virus from spreading further.

Other measures announced in the Monday, March 30, press briefing included advising employers to release their workers at 4 pm and discouraging movement of persons from upcountry to Nairobi.
