Govt gazettes 578 new administrative units across the country

Acting Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Musalia Mudavadi has gazetted 578 new administrative units across the country as the government moves to improve the coordination of services to members of the public.

In a notice on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, Mudavadi said that the additional administrative units will also effectively address security issues in respective areas.

The proposed sub-counties, divisions, locations, and sub-locations across the country were arrived at after undergoing the process of scrutiny to see whether they meet the set criteria.

“When operational, the 27 sub-counties, 59 divisions, 170 locations, and 322 sub-locations will improve citizens’ access to government services and effectively address security issues in respective areas,” reads part of the notice.

According to the notice, the newly established sub-counties include Magarini South (Magarini renamed), Magarini North, Kokane: Headquarters – Assa; Akachiu, Maua (Igembe South renamed), Tharaka West: Headquarters – Kibung’a, Mukothima, Ndithini: Headquarters – Kitineni Market, Nuu: Headquarters – Nuu Trading Centre, Zombe (Mutitu Sub-County renamed), Illeret, Engineer, Soin: Headquarters – Kipsitet.

Additionally, Sigowet (Soin Sigowet renamed): Headquarters – Chepkemel, Kolowa: Headquarters – Kolowa, Baringo West: Headquarters- Barwesa, Mukutani: Headquarters – Mukutani, Tiaty Central (Tiaty West renamed): Headquarters – Chemolingot, Samburu West: Headquarters – Loosuk, Saboti, North East Kano: Headquarters – Masogo, Ndhiwa East: Headquarters – Ombo, Ndhiwa West (Ndhiwa renamed), Siaya West: Headquarters – Uranga, Embakasi East, Embakasi West, Embakasi North, Embakasi Central (Embakasi renamed), Embakasi South, Roysambu and Ruaraka.

Counties affected

According to the gazette notice, for the new administrative units in 59 divisions, 170 locations, and 322 sub-locations, the government, through the Ministry of Interior, created them in 24 counties.

The counties include Kilifi, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Meru, Kitui, Makueni, Nyandarua, Turkana, Samburu, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Baringo, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Kisii.
