Moi University vice-chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgei was on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, grilled by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) over graft in the institution.

The anti-graft watchdog revealed that it is investigating embezzlement of funds amounting to Ksh2.2 billion.

“Moi University vice-chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgei is currently before investigators at the Commission’s North Rift Regional Offices in Eldoret over the alleged embezzlement of public funds and procurement irregularities involving multiple infrastructural projects worth,” EACC stated on X on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

EACC says Kosgei is the 59th person to record a statement in the investigation, which commenced in June 2024.

“The commission is also undertaking investigations targeting top officials of the University of Nairobi and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology over related violations of the law,” EACC added.

Moi University woes

The University is currently struggling with debts amounting to over Ksh12 billion, which is threatening its existence unless there is intervention.

Speaking on Monday, November 18, 2024, Education CS Julius Ogamba assured Kenyans that the government will save the university from collapse.

“We have put in place a programme that will ensure Moi University operates sustainably. A comprehensive strategy to address its challenges is in advanced stages. We will soon update the public on the progress,” Ogamba said.

“It is unfair for students to spend nine years pursuing a degree. We are committed to resolving Moi University’s challenges with long-term and sustainable solutions.”
