A middle-aged man said to be mentally ill has been arrested after he — on Tuesday morning (March 24) — stole an ambulance belonging to Huruma District Hospital in Eldoret, and smashed it against a fuel tanker.
The ambulance had been parked at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, when the mentally ill man, who was in the MTRH compound, hopped into it, ignited the engine and sped out.
K24 Digital was told that the ambulance driver had left the key in the ignition, and thought that “given the hospital was secure, no one would attempt to steal the van”. The driver, we understand, was helping a nurse admit a patient at the MTRH, when the incident happened.
After accessing the vehicle, the mentally-ill man drove out in haste and, while on the road, he rammed against a fuel tanker, causing it to overturn.
The suspect sustained minor injuries, whereas the driver of the tanker escaped unharmed.
Uasin Gishu fire department officer, David Sitati, confirmed the incident.
The mentally-ill man was arrested, and taken to a Marura police post.
