Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria has raised concerns about the safety and hygiene of street food in the city after receiving disturbing photos showing food trolleys being stored in public urinals.
Sharing the alarming images on his X account on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Mosiria urged the public to be cautious when consuming food from street vendors.
Mosiria emphasized the importance of food hygiene, advising Nairobians to proactively ensure the food they consume is prepared and stored in safe conditions.
“As you consume street food, always remember to ask the vendors where the food is prepared and where they store their trolleys. It’s important to ensure that the food is prepared in a clean and hygienic environment and that the trolleys are properly stored to avoid contamination,” Mosiria advised.
Mosiria reassured the public that the county government is taking swift action to address the situation. He emphasized the need to restore order in the streets and warned that vendors found violating health regulations would face consequences.
“Your health and safety should always come first when enjoying street food. We are going to make sure we restore order and for anyone found violating the law action shall be taken against them. Let’s join hands to ensure a clean and safe city for all.”
Mosira’s efforts
Mosiria has intensified his efforts to address poor hygiene in residential areas, gaining attention for his relentless campaigns targeting unsanitary street food vendors and unclean environments within the city.
Recently, the cleanliness chief urged tenants to report landlords and agents who fail to uphold required hygiene standards on their properties.
During a media briefing on Saturday, September 14, 2024, Mosiria expressed frustration over tenants withholding key information, which hampers the county’s ability to enforce sanitation regulations effectively.
“Tenants who are supposed to help us keep their environment conducive have decided to hide their agents and caretakers. We go to the tenants and ask them where the agent and caretaker or landlord are, they decide to hide them, and we see the caretaker running. The occupants of these houses are not honest themselves,” Mosiria stated.
