In a striking show of loyalty, activist Kasmuel McOure has voiced his full support for opposition leader Raila Odinga’s bid for the Africa Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship, calling out those who, he says, only value his activism when it involves criticism of Baba.

In a post on X on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Kasmuel described the personal attacks and ethnic slurs he has faced since embracing his Luo identity.

“Baba, the moment I embraced my identity as a Luo man, some of the so-called ‘tribeless’ Kenyans hurled every filthy, stereotypical insult they had reserved for our people,” Kasmuel wrote, using the term of respect for Raila, who is widely known as ‘Baba’ (father) among his supporters.

The activist pointed out that his critics seem to appreciate his work only when it aligns with their negative perceptions of Raila, adding that his time spent with the former prime minister has deepened his understanding of the sacrifices he has made.

“To some, I am only worthy of praise when I criticize you—when I turn a blind eye to the sacrifices you’ve made and the wealth of wisdom you offer,” Kasmuel noted, reflecting on Raila’s misunderstood leadership.

His statement sheds light on the polarizing figure that Raila remains in Kenyan politics, where praise often follows only when it fits certain narratives.

Despite the public pressure, Kasmuel vowed not to abandon Raila Odinga, whom he describes as a guiding force in his life.

“I refuse to distance myself from one of our greatest leaders just to seek approval online. I will not abandon a man who understands my struggles, who has walked the same path, and is willing to guide me through the complexities of our land’s politics,” he declared.

His post also praised Raila’s wife, Ida, for her kindness and counsel, a gesture that emphasized Kasmuel’s personal connection to the Odinga family.

“I will not turn away from Mama Ida’s kindness and counsel,” he wrote, speaking directly to Odinga family legacy in Kenya’s political sphere.

Kasmuel’s support for Raila comes at a critical time as the former prime minister seeks the chairmanship of the Africa Union Commission, a move that has sparked widespread interest both in Kenya and across the continent.

In his post, Kasmuel wished Raila success in his quest, framing his backing as unwavering.

“I fully support your pursuit of the AUC chairmanship and pray for your triumph. Bring that seat home,” Kasmuel urged, rounding off his statement with a message of solidarity and hope.

His post resonated with many of Raila’s supporters, while also prompting debate on the place of ethnic identity in Kenya’s fractured political landscape.

Kasmuel’s declaration of loyalty, particularly in the face of ongoing tribal tensions, has drawn attention not only to his personal beliefs but also to the broader struggles of political activism in a country where loyalty and criticism often intertwine.
