108 staff members at Gachagua’s office sent on immediate compulsory leave

108 staff members at the office of the impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have been directed to proceed on compulsory leave.

In an internal memo signed by the Principal Administrative Secretary Patrick Mwangi and copied to Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff Felix Koskei, the affected workers are in job groups T and U.

“Following the ongoing Constitutional process affecting His Excellency the Deputy President, it has been decided as follows; All officers in Job Groups T and U are hereby instructed to proceed on compulsory leave with immediate effect; II.

“All Heads of Departments are directed to ensure they designate in writing a responsible officer to be in-charge of their respective Departments with a copy to the Chief Of staff and the Principal Administrative Secretary,” the internal memo read in part.

“All serving officers in Supernumerary Contracts shall also proceed on compulsory leave with immediate effect; IV. All Heads of Departments shall ensure conformity to these directives by 1200hrs on 19th October, 2024,” it further directed.

Senior officials

Among those sent on compulsory leave include the chief of staff, private secretary, administrative secretaries and advisors.

Notable names include former MPs Ngunjiri Wambugu and George Theuri who all served as Gachagua’s advisors.

This comes after the Senate upheld Gachagua’s impeachment on five grounds. Following his impeachment, President William Ruto nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to occupy the position.

Kindiki’s nomination was approved by the National Assembly on Friday, October 18, 2024.

However, Gachagua moved to court and obtained conservatory orders over his impeachment.
