Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has condemned the incident where activist Morara Kebaso was attacked at Bomas of Kenya after chaos erupted during the public participation exercise on the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a statement on Saturday, October 5, 2024, Senator Omtatah argued that such acts are retrogressive and undermine the foundation of democracy.

“Such acts of aggression have no place in a democratic society that upholds the principles of free speech, open dialogue, and peaceful assembly.

“Violence against individuals expressing their views undermines the very foundations of our democracy and instills fear within our communities,” Omtatah’s statement read in part.

“Public participation is open to all members of the public,” it added.

Call to police

Following the incident where Kebaso found himself scuttling for safety at Bomas, Omtatah has called on law enforcement agencies to open a probe into the matter.

The vocal senator argued that the perpetrators of that action should not go unpunished.

Further, Omtatah called on security officers to put up measures to avoid the recurrence of such attacks during public participation forums.

“It is imperative that we protect the rights of every citizen to voice their opinions without the threat of harm or intimidation. The law enforcement agencies should thoroughly investigate this incident, hold the perpetrators accountable, and ensure that measures are in place to prevent such acts in the future,” he insisted.

Appeal to Kenyans

At the same time, Omtatah highlighted that it was important for Kenyans to engage in constructive conversation without resorting to violence.

He challenged the citizenry to rise above the culture of dissent and violence to drive much-needed change in the country.

“Moreover, we must collectively stand against a culture of violence and hostility that stifles dissent and discourages active citizenship. It is only through robust and respectful discourse that we can address the pressing issues facing our nation.

“Let us unite to foster an environment where every individual feels safe and empowered to engage in the democratic process. The right to express differing opinions is fundamental to our progress as a society, and we must protect it resolutely,” Omtatah concluded.

During the incident, Morara was overpowered by a myriad of chairs thrown in his direction forcing his security team to whisk him away to safety.
