Authorities in Gigiri, Nairobi have arrested a police officer who took Ksh20, 000 bribe from a Runda motorist on Wednesday morning.

Constable Mohammed Sirat had demanded Ksh20, 000 from Michael Kidula Mboya, claiming it was cash bail for a traffic offence committed by Mboya on Limuru Road.

Mboya was driving his BMW car towards Westlands when Sirat flagged him down at Redhill Junction at 6:40am.

The cop, who was alone and dressed in work uniform, accused Mboya of overtaking at an undesignated section.

“The officer asked for a bribe of Ksh20, 000 in form of cash bail, which Mboya did not have at the time,” reads a police report filed at Gigiri police post.

Sirat is said to have escorted Mboya to NCBA Bank ATM lobby at Village Market Mall, where Mboya withdrew the Ksh20, 000 and gave it to the police officer.

“He (Mboya) was issued with a fake cash bail receipt of the said-amount [directing him] to appear at the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday, March 24,” says the police report.

It is said Sirat had written on the back of the said-cash bail receipt: “Do not go to court, [you are] forgiven.”

“Mboya became suspicious of the document, and reported the matter to the [Gigiri Police] station. The OCS and officers acted swiftly, and went to Limuru Road to search for the said-officer.

“Later, acting on intelligence, the law enforcement officers proceeded to House No. 5, Block 12 after Mboya described the said-officer. PC Mohammed Sirat of police service number 101895 was found counting the said-money. He was arrested and the exhibit was recovered,” says the police report.

Also recovered, was the said-cash bail receipt.

Sirat will be arraigned later, police say.
