Former Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars midfielder Collins ‘Gattuso’ Okoth has lodged a battle to secure bail in a case where he is accused of murder.

In a statement by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) on Saturday, September 14, 2024, the former Harambee Stars player is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, for mentioning.

This is after the prosecuting counsel, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Gikui Gachuhi, opposed the release of the accused on bond.

“The court directed the prosecution to file an affidavit opposing bail within three days, with the defence to respond,” ODPP’s statement read in part.

Okoth was charged alongside Silvia Aoko for the murder of a three-year-old baby in Lucky Summer Estate in Ruaraka Sub-County, Nairobi County.

The former Harambee Stars player was accused of killing the infant on the night of April 22, 2024, when the child’s mother had allegedly stepped out of their rental house.

The court heard that police found the body behind the building where the deceased lived with her mother and her friend.

“Okoth, a renowned ex-Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars midfielder, and his co-accused, Sylvia Aoko Odhiambo, denied murder charges before Justice Esther Nyambura Maina,” ODPP explained.

Plea

Okoth took a plea after the prosecution confirmed that the suspects had undergone medical assessment and that the reports were ready.

He has since been in police custody as detectives conclude their investigations into the murder.

However, after pleading not guilty, Okoth lodged an appeal to secure his release on bail. The court has ruled that the mention of the application will be on September Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
