Dickson Ndiema, the ex-lover of the late Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has died at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

According to reports, Ndiema died Monday, September 9, 2024, at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he had been admitted.

“It’s true he has died from the (burn) injuries,” Dr Owen Menach from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital told the BBC.

Ndiema died a few days after Cheptengei, who died on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at the Moi Referral Hospital. She had burns to more than 75 per cent of her body after being doused in petrol and set on fire by Ndiema, police said on September 3, 2024.

Ndiema is reported to have attacked his lover while she was coming home over unresolved land issues. He sustained over 30 per cent burns during the attack and was admitted at the same hospital.

Cheptegei, who was a member of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), will be given a military burial on Saturday, September 14, 2024, in Uganda.
