Student leaders from various institutions in the country have announced national demonstrations to protest against the implementation of the new university funding model.
In various statements, student leaders drawn from the University of Nairobi (UoN), Kenyatta University, Kibabiii University, Machakos University, and Great Lakes University among others called on their fellow students from other institutions to join them in the demonstrations slated for Monday, September 9, 2024.
The student leaders noted that their continuous efforts to engage the government on the policy have not brought the needed change, leaving them with no choice but to take to the streets.
“I hereby call for a mega demonstration on 9th September 2024 to reject the new funding model. Your participation is crucial in advocating for our rights and the integrity of our institution,” a statement from the President, University of Nairobi read in parts.
“I trust this message finds you well. I am writing to inform you about the planned nationwide demonstration scheduled for Monday, 9th of September, starting at 9 am. I urge every student leader across the country to mobilize their constituents and join us in making our voices heard. It is time to communicate with the government in a manner they will comprehend,” an internal memo from Kenyatta University reads.
The Nakuru County Students & Youth’s Association (NACOSYA) have made a similar decree against the university funding model and called on students to attend the demonstrations.
