2024 Nairobi City Marathon: List of major roads set for closure

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced temporary closures of major roads within Nairobi to facilitate the 2024 Nairobi City Marathon, an action slated for September 8, 2024.

Here are the specific times when particular roads will be closed, starting Saturday, September 7, 2024:

1. Expressway

The highway between James Gichuru Road and JKIA will be closed in both directions from Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 10:00 PM to Sunday, September 8 at 3:00 PM.

2. Waiyaki Way

The two inner lanes on both sides of the highway between James Gichuru Road and the Expressway entrance will be closed from midnight on Saturday until 10:00 AM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

3. Thika Superhighway

The exit from A2 to Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road direction, will be closed from Saturday midnight to 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

4. Harry Thuku Road

Harry Thuku Road will be closed from Saturday midnight until 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

The affected stretches include University Way between Highway Roundabout and Harry Thuku Road on both sides, Koinange Street between University Way and Kenyatta Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue between Koinange Street and Wabera Street, City Hall Way between Wabera Street and Taifa Road, and Harambee Avenue between Haile Selassie Avenue.

5. University Way

The stretch from the Highway Roundabout to Harry Thuku Road will be shut down in both directions starting from midnight on Saturday until 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

6. Koinange Street

The road will be closed between University Way and Kenyatta Avenue, closed from Saturday midnight to Sunday, September 8, 2024, at 2:00 PM.

7. Mombasa Road, Southern Bypass 

The stretch of road between the Expressway exit and the Southern Bypass entrance will be closed from midnight on Saturday until 11:00 AM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

It will also be closed on the side of ABC, the entrance to Expressway, the Southern Bypass, and the entrance-exit Southern Bypass from Saturday midnight to 11:00 AM Sunday, September 8, 2024.

8. Uhuru Highway

The highway will be closed in both directions from the Popo Road Roundabout to A2 Thika Road starting Saturday midnight until 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

9. Lang’ata Road

The section between Douglas Wakiihuri Road and Uhuru Highway will be closed from midnight on Saturday until 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

10. Wakiihuri Road

Wakiihuri Road will be closed from Saturday midnight to 2:00 PM Sunday, September 8, 2024.

11. Bunyala Road

Lastly, the stretch of road between Bunyala Roundabout and Enterprise Road will be closed from midnight on Saturday until 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 8, 2024.

Kenha has advised motorists and the general public to use the following alternative routes during the temporary closure.

  • Muthangari Road
  • Lang’ata Road
  • Ring Road
  • Juja Road
  • Kenyatta Avenue
  • Outer Ring Road
  • The City Center Routes
  • Nairobi Ring Road Network
  • Moi Avenue
  • Uhuru Highway
  • Murang’a Road
  • Southern Bypass Alternatives: Lang’ata Road
  • Westlands: Ring Road Ngara
  • Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Access Roads: Airport North Road
  • Consider smaller streets and local roads

Additional routes include:

  • Nairobi Ring Road Network: Ring Road Westlands, Ring Road Ngara, Ring Road Eastlands
  • University Way
  • Halle Selassie Avenue
