Police have arrested a 23-year-old man for breaking into KCB Bank-Kakamega branch, and vandalising electric equipment and a security alarm.

Jason Abakusi Munai is said to have illegally accessed the bank’s ATM booth late Friday, March 13, and climbed to the ceiling, where he defecated before climbing down to the back area of the bank, where he destroyed the alarm system and disconnected the power line.

Kakamega Central OCPD, David Kabena, said he was called by a representative of the security firm that offers services to the affected bank and informed that there was a suspicious activity going on at the bank that required his (Kabena’s) attention.

“At 7am today (Saturday, March 14), we received a call from a company that offers security services for KCB Bank in Kakamega. The call came from the security firm’s headquarters in Kisumu. They told us that they had received signals that the bank’s alarm system had been tampered with. I relayed the message to the OCS, who rushed to the scene alongside other officers. I followed them later,” Kabena told K24 Digital.

“We found that there was a young man, who had climbed to the ceiling after entering the bank through the ATM booth. He, thereafter, went to the back area of the bank and destroyed electricity connection and deactivated the security alarm. Nonetheless, he did not steal anything. The strong room is intact,” said Kabena.

Locals said the suspect, Jason Abakusi Munai, was a known mentally-ill man in the area, and his condition could have contributed to his actions.

One of the residents, who spoke to K24 Digital, said at around 7pm Friday, they had spotted Munai in a local market without any clothes on him.

“We know him to be a mentally-ill man,” said the resident.

OCPD Kabena, however, says no medical report has been produced to authorities to back up the residents’ claim.

“Locals say that he has mental health problems. As of now, there is no medical report produced to confirm the status of the suspect’s mental health. Before we arraign him, we have decided to take him to hospital for mental tests. Our subsequent action will be informed by the doctor’s report,” said Kabena.

The Kakamega Central police boss said they have arrested a security guard at the KCB Bank, and will question him on why he wasn’t at work when Munai broke into the building.
