Kenya confirms third case of Mpox

Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Deborah Mlongo Barasa has confirmed that Kenya has recorded it’s third case of Mpox. 

In a statement, Barasa noted that the recent case which involves a 30-year-old female who recently travelled to Uganda, was confirmed after samples taken from her tested positive.

 The CS, however, indicated that the lady is currently in a stable condition and in an isolation unit. 

She added that active surveillance has been enhanced across other counties to control the spread of the disease. 

“The Ministry reports a third confirmed Mpox case in Nairobi, involving a 30-year-old female who recently traveled to Uganda. She is in stable condition in an isolation unit. This case brings the total to three in Kenya, with previous cases in Taita Taveta and Busia. Active surveillance continues to control the spread of the disease,” the statement reads in parts. 

Additionally, CS Barasa stated that a total of 582,847 travelers have been screened at all 26 designated ports of entry across the country. 

“Cumulatively, a total of eighty-nine samples have been submitted to our laboratories for Mpox disease testing out of which seventy-nine samples have tested negative for the disease while three samples have tested positive and the remaining seven samples are currently undergoing analysis. In addition we have screened a total of 582,847 travelers at our 26 designated ports of entry across the country,” the CS added. 

Barasa also issued an update on the second patient diagnosed with Mpox saying he has fully recovered and has since been discharged from the hospital. 

The CS further reassured Kenyans that the ministry was doing its best to safeguard the health and well-being of its citizens. 

She reiterated the ministry’s dedication to support affected counties with thorough investigations and appropriate response measures to new cases.

The CS also encouraged members of the public to adhere to the set guidelines and protect themselves from the diseases.
