A total of eight police officers based at Gigiri Police Station have been interdicted following the escape of 13 inmates, among them being the suspect believed to have been behind the Kware murders.

Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, while addressing a press conference at Gigiri Police Station on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, confirmed the escape of Kware murder suspect Collins Jumaisi Khalusha.

Jumaisi’s daring escape

Masengeli said Jumaisi had escaped together with 12 other foreign suspects who had been arrested for being in the country illegally.

“Today, August 20, 2024, morning hours, there was an incident of prisoners escaping that happened at Gigiri Police Station. 13 prisoners escaped from the cells, among them 12 Eritreans who were arrested for being illegally in Kenya and one male murder suspect, namely Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, who is connected with the Kware murder incident,” Masengeli stated.

Inside job

Masengeli noted that the police preliminary investigations indicate that the daring prison break was aided by insiders.

Interdicted

Masengeli says that he had interdicted eight police officers from Gigiri who were on duty at the time the inmates escaped.

The interdicted police officers are Gigiri Sub-County Police Commander, OCS Gigiri Police Station, duty officer, duty NCO, and station guards in reports office personnel.

“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders, considering that officers were deployed accordingly at the station. Consequently, I have interdicted eight officers who were on duty last night, among them the Gigiri Sub-County Police Commander, OCS Gigiri Police Station, duty officer, duty NCO, and station guards in reports office personnel,” Masengeli said.

Investigation launched

He further pointed out that the matter is under investigation and that a manhunt has been launched for the escapees.

Moreover, Masengeli said that anyone found culpable of the unfortunate incident will face the full force of the law.

He went ahead to appeal to Kenyans with any information that can lead to the rearrest of the suspects to report to the nearest police station.

“The matter is currently under investigation by our internal affairs unit, and any person found culpable will face the full force of law. We have launched a manhunt for the escapees, and we further appeal to the members of the public with any information that may lead to the rearrest of the suspects, especially the murder suspect, to report to the nearest police station or through the police hotline numbers 999, 112, or 911,” he said.
