Detectives from the Anti-Nàrcotics Unit (ANU) based at Malindi Police Station are pursuing a nàrcotic trafficker identified as Morris Ware who narrowly escaped arrest during a recent raid.
In an update on social media on Monday, August 19, 2024, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect slipped through their fingers during the raid.
The operation, which uncovered a substantial stash of cànnabis valued at Ksh2.5 million, has heightened the urgency to capture the elusive suspect.
DCI said the raid was initiated following reports from concerned locals in Midodoni village, who had observed suspicious activities linked to Ware.
Acting on this intelligence, officers launched a swift operation targeting Ware’s store. However, the suspect managed to flee just moments before the officers arrived, leaving behind his illegàl merchandise.
“Following reports from members of the public about the suspect’s engagement in illegàl dealings, officers launched a raid at his store in Midodoni village. However, the suspect got away after spotting the officers leaving his store unattended,” DCI said.
Inside the abandoned store, officers discovered 86 kilograms of bhang, meticulously packed in four large sacks.
The seized bhang, which holds significant street value, was promptly transported to Malindi Police Station, where it remains in safe custody as a crucial exhibit in the ongoing investigation.
DCI has since issued an appeal to the public, urging them to provide any information that could lead to Ware’s capture.
“We urge members of the public to volunteer information on suspicious characters or activities to ensure a safe and secure drúg-free environment for all citizens,” the DCI stated.
Mombasa
This recent bust follows a similar operation at Moi International Airport in Mombasa, where ANU detectives intercepted a shipment of bhang worth Ksh13 million.
On Friday, August 16, 2024, DCI said officers from the airport unit and ANU, acting on a tip-off, conducted a stakeout at the Mariakani weighbridge.
There, they apprehended two suspects, Crispin Oduor Owino and Caleb Otieno Agolo, who were found transporting a massive haul of bhang in a silver Toyota Noah.
Upon further inspection, authorities discovered 16 sacks and 226 large sticks of bhang, along with a concealed number plate hidden under the driver’s seat.
The nàrcotics, weighing 456 kilograms, were subsequently analyzed and confirmed by the government chemist.
The suspects in the Mombasa operation are currently in custody, awaiting formal charges.
Meanwhile, the search for Morris Ware continues as law enforcement intensifies efforts to crack down on the drúg trade in the region.
