Detectives investigating the death of Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei, who was head of security at Deputy President William Ruto’s office, have unearthed new details that suggest the policeman was murdered.

The detectives revealed that there were three strangers in Kenei’s house in Nairobi’s Villa Franca estate when he was killed.

The sleuths said that the people who killed Kenei talked with an employee of a mobile service provider to clear data from his phone.

Here is a timeline of Kenei’s last moments:

February 13, 9.39 am: Former Sports CS Rashid Echesa and two foreigners enter DP Ruto’s office.

February 13, 10.02 am: The trio leave and Echesa is arrested a few minutes later.

February 17, 4 pm: Sergeant Kenei walks alone into Villa Franca estate carrying mangoes.

February 18: DP’s Chief of Staff writes to IG to investigate, among other things, which security officer facilitated Echesa’s entry to the DP’s waiting room.

February 18, 9:41 pm: Kenei calls the wife. The call lasts 53 seconds.

February 19, 12.25 am: Wife received Sh35,000 from Kenei’s Equity mobile account. She immediately asks what the money is for but gets no response.

February 19, 4.50 am: Wife asks again, still no response.

February 19: Kenei’s Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp accounts deactivated.

February 19, 7.32 am: Another Sh10,000 sent to Kenei’s father.

February 19: DP’s Chief of Staff writes again to IG to expedite investigations and asks that any officer found culpable be arraigned soonest possible.

February 19. 9.25 pm: Wife sends a brief message “Uko?” Still, no response.

February 20, 2 pm: A neighbour, Charles Ng’ang’a, reports a foul smell coming from Kenei’s house.

According to the People Daily, one of the suspects in the Kenei murder case is said to have communicated with a senior official at DP Ruto’s Harambee House Annex office.

Investigators seem to have zeroed in on three suspects in on three suspects believed to have been the last visitors to Kenei’s house before his lifeless body was found lying on the floor with a bullet wound on February 20.

“At long last, we cracked the case; this was pure murder,” said a senior detective privy to the investigations.
