United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala (SG) has denied resigning from the party amid wrangles.

In a statement shared on X, Malala who termed the speculation as propaganda, urged his supporters and the members of UDA to ignore the gossip adding that he is still the party’s SG.

He further refuted claims of division in the party stating that UDA is stable and focused on helping President William Ruto achieve the Kenya Kwanza manifesto.

“Ignore propaganda. The party is stable and focused on helping President  @WilliamsRuto achieve his agenda for Kenya. Chama iko Imara,” he wrote.

Fake Letter

In a letter dated Tuesday, July 30, 2024, stated that Malala had stepped down from the secretary-general position with immediate effect.

According to the letter, the current wrangles in the party and the broader political landscape as the reasons behind his bold step.

“Tuesday, July 30 2024, Nairobi, Kenya Today, I, Cleophas Malalah, resign from my position as Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), effective immediately,” the letter read.

“This decision comes after a period of deep personal reflection and consideration of the current state of our party and the broader political landscape. The political harlotry that has unfolded, including the recent alignment of Raila Odinga with the government through unconventional means, has created an environment of instability and disillusionment. This move, which undermines the democratic process and the principles we stand for, has deeply disturbed me.”

The letter further stated that Malala would remain committed to supporting the values of democracy and good governance.

“As I step down, I remain committed to supporting the values of democracy and good governance. I will continue to advocate for the issues that matter most to our nation and work towards a more united and effective political landscape,” the letter reads.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the members of UDA who have supported me during my tenure. Your dedication and commitment to the ideals of our party have been a source of inspiration. I remain hopeful that UDA will find a path forward that aligns with its founding principles and effectively serves the people of Kenya.”

UDA wrangles

On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, a section of UDA party members came out to push for the removal of  Malala as the Secretary-General.

Led by Lawyer Joe Khalende, the group accused Malala of sabotaging the party’s progress and the Broad-Based Government formed by the party leader.

“Malala is supporting the TAWE movement and agendas which contradict the ruling party, he has abdicated his role and duty as the SG of the ruling party, he has joined our opponents,” Khalende said.

“ I Joe Khalende will be taking over as the SG of the UDA party. He has gone against our party leader he is at the forefront against the formation of a broad-based government and I am here to confirm that he is no longer the SG of the UDA party.”
