The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking with the arrest of a suspect linked to a Ksh3 million drug smuggling operation.

In a statement shared in their X account on July 23, 2024, the detectives revealed that the arrest comes as a result of meticulous investigative work carried out by the DCI who apprehended the prime suspect that had escaped a police dragnet in the wee hours of July 10, 2024.

“In a determined effort, detectives in Kisii South have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against trafficking in narcotics after apprehending the prime suspect who escaped a police dragnet in the wee hours of July 10, 2024, abandoning a drug-laden motor vehicle Reg. No KDP 353U,” part of the DCI statement read.

According to the detectives, while on routine patrol along the Kisii-Migori highway, police officers spotted a speeding Nissan Xtrail heading towards Kisii town but when signalled to stop, the vehicle initially slowed down and then bolted, running over spikes at the roadblock.

Cat and mouse chase

During a high-speed chase, the officers pursued the suspect’s vehicle, which ended up in a ditch after skidding off the road. Three occupants fled into a thicket nearby, leaving behind the car.

Showcasing their dedication to combating drug-related crimes in the region, the DCI managed to smoke out the main suspect, Samuel Omondi Audi on July 22, 2024, in Kibera where he was hiding.

“After toiling and moiling for days, the search for the suspects bore fruit yesterday when detectives, acting on a tip-off, managed to smoke out the main suspect, Samuel Omondi Audi 36, from his hideout in Kibera, Nairobi,” DCI noted.

Further, the detectives revealed that the suspect was arraigned and the search for his accomplices was still ongoing.
