The United States Embassy has urged the Kenya police force to uphold the rule of law and exercise restraint when engaging with Gen Z protestors.

In a statement on Thursday, July 18, 2024, the embassy underlined the fundamental rights of individuals to peacefully demonstrate, while also stressing the accountability of those who engage in looting and disruptive behaviour.

Violence and abductions

Expressing deep concern over the recent incidents of violence during protests, the embassy unequivocally condemned the alarming reports of abductions and shootings by law enforcement.

By urging the police to uphold the rights of peaceful demonstrators and to apprehend those responsible for unlawful actions, the embassy highlighted the critical need for a balanced and respectful approach to maintaining public order.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of violence, including shootings and abductions of protestors, journalists, and others. Constructive engagement of citizens and civil society, aided by a free and independent media, is a pillar of democracy. These are values we share with Kenya and which we must all protect,” the statement read in parts.

Moreover, the embassy recognized the pivotal role of the media in fostering constructive dialogue between authorities and citizens, expressing the importance of transparent communication and mutual understanding in times of social unrest.

Open engagement  and accountability

Further, the embassy encouraged the need for open engagement and accountability and emphasized the significance of upholding democratic values and respecting human rights.

The US Embassy reaffirmed the enduring bond between the United States and Kenya, commending the government’s efforts to address grievances and promote unity and reconciliation.

“As a long-time friend and partner to Kenya, the Embassy notes the government’s July 18 remarks about addressing public grievances and encourages the government to continue taking steps forward, including on corruption and accountability, to promote national unity and reconciliation,” the statement read in part.
