Ijara Member of Parliament Sophia Abdi Noor has condemned the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for transferring about 50 secondary teachers from her constituency.
Talking to students and teachers at Haji Girls secondary and Ijara Secondary schools in her constituency, Ms. Noor said it was unfortunate for TSC to transfer teachers while they were working out strategies in conjunction with the security apparatus on how they could retain teachers in the town, especially non-local ones.
Noor castigated the commission for employing teachers and later transferring them when an incident occurred without consulting the local leadership.
She said the incident that occurred in Kamuthe and Saretho primary schools where three teachers were killed was in Fafi Constituency should not have affect operations in Ijara.
“So why transfer teachers in Ijara constituency?” she quipped
The IJara MP said the teachers have signed a contract to work in the region yet TSC was transferring them while they were working with locals, the security apparatus, the youth and women groups in the region to improve security for teachers.
She wondered how many non-locals were living in Ijara Constituency and doing business while others were in the construction business.
“The private schools are taught by non-locals and there is no single teacher killed by Al-Shabab in Ijara Constituency,” she said.
Noor said she would raise the matter with the Teachers’ Service Commission CEO Mrs. Nancy Macharia.
She thanked those who were willing to teach and assured them that efforts were being made by the security services to ensure all schools were guarded as directed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi.
Dr. Matiangi said Kenya Police Reservists would be recruited to work alongside multi-agency security team to drive Shabab militia from the region.
She was accompanied by officials from USAID and other NGO representatives who came to support the residents in health education and water sector.
Ijara Sub County Commissioner Samson Towett and his Hulugho counterpart Mr. Bernard ole Kipury were in attendance.
