The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Daadab Member of Parliament Farah Maalim to appear before the commission on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at their offices in Upperhill.

In a statement shared on their X account on July 10, 2024, NCIC stated that their summon came in light of investigations into the MP’s remarks made in the Somali language after the recent Gen Z demonstrations against the finance bill.

“The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Daadab Member of Parliament, Hon. Farah Maalim to appear before the Commission this Thursday 11th July 2024 at 11.00 A.M. at its offices on the 17th Floor, Britam Tower, Hospital Road, Upper hill, Nairobi,” NCIC statement read.

Further, the commission added that as part of the ongoing investigations, Farah Maalim would be expected to provide assistance and clarification regarding the statements attributed to him.

“Pursuant to Section 27 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act No. 12 of 2008, the Commission is investigating utterances made by the MP in Somali language, on the Gen Z demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024,” part of their statement reads in parts.

According to the commission, Farah Maalim’s utterances had the potential to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, violence, and hostility among various political groups.

“The utterances are likely to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence or discrimination, and affect harmonious coexistence between groups of different political affiliations in Kenya, contrary to Section 13 (1) (a) of the NCI Act,” NCIC stated.

Farah’s utterances

The summoning comes days after netizens caused uproar demanding the arrest and prosecution of Daadab MP Farah Maalim after a video surfaced showing him making inflammatory remarks about young Kenyan protesters.

According to the undated video which has since gone viral, Maalim, while speaking in the Somali dialect, said he would have slaughtered 5,000 young protesters every day if he were the President of Kenya.

A verified video translation revealed the legislator was scolding the Kenyan Gen Zs for attempting to march to the State House during the anti-finance Bill 2024 protests.
