The intrigues surrounding the appointment of Nairobi Deputy governor took a new turn after Speaker Beatrice Elachi forwarded Anne Kananu Mwenda’s name to the Appointment Committee for vetting.
“I have directed the Appointment committee to hasten the process and check suitability of the nominee in the interest of Nairobi residents,” said Elachi.
The Speaker made the ruling after a fiery Tuesday afternoon special sitting convened by the Leader of Majority Charles Thuo to discuss the matter.
MCAs are, however, divided over the nominee picked by Governor Mike Sonko early this month.
At the same time, the High Court declined to stop Mwenda’s appointment or the process pending the hearing and determination of a suit challenging it.
In her ruling, Justice Mumbi Ngugi questioned whether the court had the jurisdiction to hear the petition filed by Peter Odhiambo Agoro, and said the Assembly can proceed to vet Mwenda.
The judge directed that Sonko and the Assembly file their responses in the case ahead of the next mention on February 17.
Agoro moved to court seeking to stop the process and to have Sonko barred from nominating any other person for the post.
