President William Ruto has once again invited the disgruntled young Kenyans for a dialogue on the issues bedevilling the country.

Addressing the country on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, President Ruto pointed out that he had proposed an engagement with the young people after refusing to sign the Finance Bill 2024.

“Accordingly, as I committed on Sunday, I propose an engagement with young people of our nation to listen to their
issues and agree with them on their priority areas of concern,” Ruto announced.

Moreover, Ruto pointed out that he has proposed a multi-sectoral engagement which will take place in the next 14 days to find the way forward on issues affecting the youth.

“I also propose that within the next 14 days, a multi-sectoral, multistakeholder engagement be held with a view to charting the way forward on matters relating to the content of the bill as well as auxiliary issues raised in recent days on the need for austerity measures and strengthening our fight against corruption,” he stated.

At the same time, he argued that his administration is keen to create more job opportunities in the housing sector, manufacturing and other sectors of the economy.

Condolence Message

While declining to assent to the Finance Bill 2024, the Head of State sent a message of condolences to those killed during the protests.

He announced that six people had been killed during the protests despite various reports indicating that over 10 people have lost their lives.

“I send condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate manner. Consequently, having reflected on the continuing conversation around the content of the finance bill of 2024, I will decline to assent to the bill.”

His change of heart comes after a series of protests calling his administration to drop the Finance Bill. What started as a social rant went full-blown resulting in nationwide protests.

In Nairobi, angry protesters breached security and occupied Parliament Buildings on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

Some went on to destroy property inside Parliament compelling the MPs to escape through the tunnel.

Following the unprecedented actions, various leaders called on President William Ruto to embrace dialogue. Among the leaders who issued statements included former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
