There was massive destruction and vandalism in a section of Parliament buildings after the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests hit a fever pitch with their calls to occupy Parliament on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
In the confrontation that saw several protesters shot, chairs in Parliament’s lounge area were seen turned upside-down, windows shattered and walls destroyed.
The protesting members of the public are calling for a total rejection of the entire Finance Bill 2024, accountability in government, an end to corruption and the publication of all the debts owed by the state.
The Tuesday protests hit several regions of the country, with similar demonstrations being reported in Nakuru, Mombasa, Nyeri, Kisumu, Kakamega and Meru among other regions in the country.
Parliament proceedings
As the protests were ongoing, legislators were holed up in Parliament passing the controversial Finance Bill through the third reading in readiness for Presidential assent.
Opposition party ODM on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, told Parliament that they were dropping all their proposals to amend the Finance Bill and had changed their position to reject the entire bill.
However, a vote would be conducted in which 195 members of Parliament voted in favour of the Finance Bill 2024.
During the confrontation with protesters in Parliament, a local TV reporter said that Senate Speaker Amason Kingi was evacuated in an ambulance.
Members of Parliament were seen scampering for safety during the invasion that would see a police water cannon torched on Parliament Road.
Protesters engaged in running battles with police officers with some of them taking refuge in adjacent buildings near Parliament Road including the Holy Family Basilica.
Undeterred, the protesters could be seen chanting and singing as they battled with police officers throughout the city streets of Nairobi.
In the Laikipia County Assembly, similar scenes were witnessed after a section of demonstrators stormed the County chambers to protest the Finance Bill 2024.
Shattered glass could be seen scattered all over the main reception area of the assembly after protesters made their way into the premises.
