Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has condemned the use of violence on unarmed protesters in the wake of the tragic death of a young protester, Rex Masai.
The incident occurred during the anti-Finance Bill protests on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Rex Masai, who sustained gunshot wounds during the protests, succumbed to his injuries and his body was moved to the Nairobi Funeral Home, where a postmortem examination is pending.
In a statement on her X account, Passaris expressed her sorrow and outrage over the use of lethal force against peaceful demonstrators.
“The use of lethal force against unarmed protesters is a gross violation of human rights and an affront to democratic principles. It’s sickening to lose such a young soul. Rest in eternal peace Rex,” Passaris stated.
DPP on murder of Rex
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga gave a 21-day deadline for the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to complete a thorough investigation into the death of Rex.
In a statement on Friday, June 21, 2024, the DPP acknowledged the incident in which Rex was shot in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions would like to inform the general public that Rex Kanyike Masai, aged 29 years old, was allegedly shot on Thursday 20th June 2024 within the Central Business District, Nairobi, and died while undergoing medical treatment at Bliss Health Care Centre, Moi Avenue,” the statement read.
Ingonga instructed IPOA to conduct a detailed investigation into the issue and submit the resulting inquiry file and report to his office within 21 days.
Kenyans fishing for killer cop
Kenyans on X are actively sharing a video of a recent shooting, trying to identify the shooter.
The individual in question is casually dressed, making it difficult to determine if he is a police officer. In the video, he is seen wearing a black cap, blue shirt, black jeans, and white sneakers.
Some Kenyans online are proposing that the deceased protester’s name be memorialized as a martyr who died fighting for the rights and freedoms of Kenyans.
