Comedian and Radio host Daniel Ndambuki alias Churchill on Friday night June 21, 2024, hosted an all-star comedy show to celebrate the late Fred Omondi.

The event, held at the Carnivore Simba Salon in Nairobi, was intended to raise funds for Fred Omondi’s family and celebrate his life.

However, it took an unexpected turn when Ababu Namwamba, the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts, got on the stage to address attendees.

Ababu’s presence rattled the audience sparking anti-Ruto chants.

“Ruto must go! Ruto must go!” The crowd erupted in a chorus as Ababu tried addressing them.

Churchill’s attempts to calm the situation bore no fruit as the agitated crowd wanted nothing to do with the government.

However, the defiant CS kept on talking even as he was being booed.

“Keep booing, keep cheering, keep saying no as others say yes,” Ababu said addressing the hostile audience.

The CS went on to give his contribution of Ksh300,000 to Fred Omondi’s family amid the jeering.

To support the sendoff of our brother Fred Omondi, poleni sana. Na wale tunaendesha nduti, wale tunaendesha buses let us be careful on our roads. I will hand my contributions, yes Churchill my contribution for Ksh300,000 kusaidia familia,” Ababu said as he handed over the cash to Churchill.

The drama continued as Ababu went ahead to ask content creators to utilize the ensuing fiasco for their content creation.

“And leo, make sure you get enough content. The booing is great content asanteni sana,” Ababu said.

Adding; “I enjoyed this very much.”

The crowd’s hostility continued, forcing the Sports CS to leave the stage in shame.

Comedian Eric Omondi while addressing the crowd warned President William Ruto from assenting to the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

“If this Finance Bill passes, my message you Dr William Samoei Ruto the President of the Republic of Kenya, do not attempt, do not think, do not imagine, don’t dream, don’t try to put pen to paper. Kenya will never be the same again,” Eric Omondi said.

Ababu’s statement

Namwamba later took to social media to defend his actions at the event.

In a statement posted on Saturday June 22, 2024, the CS said that he was pleased to have faced opposition from those who are opposed to the bill.

He emphasized the importance of paying taxes for national self-sustenance and praised the government’s efforts to promote the creative economy.

“Paid my last respects to the memory of the late creative Fredrick Omondi at the Carnivore Simba Salon, where the Churchill Show’s Last Laugh edition was dedicated to fundraise and celebrate him. Incredible talent Freddie, snatched from our midst way too young.

“Fred’s comedy, as with our other creatives, mirrors Kenya’s robust democratic culture encapsuled in Article 37 of the Constitution, among others, which we must cherish and guard jealously as the cornerstone of our national stability.

“And so I was quite pleased to come face to face with some of our fellow citizens opposed to the #FinanceBill2024. When emotions settle, blinkers fall off and fact is shifted from fiction, reality will dawn: the reality that we have a country to build, a task in which each of us have a role. Including the responsibility to pay taxes for national self-sustenance.

“I am delighted that the Creative Economy is a central pillar in the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda. And the Finance Bill will facilitate robust initiatives like the transformative #WhozNext project for Kenyan creatives, which we are rolling out next month under the Talanta Hela flagship.

“Kenya tunajenga pamoja. By #DeliveringThePlan,” the CS wrote on X.
