The Independent Policing Oversight Authority(IPOA) has launched investigations into eight complaints received during the 2022 electioneering period.
This has been revealed in their police monitoring report which was launched on Friday, October 7, 2022.
The oversight authority has launched investigations into the reported incidents to ensure that justice is served.
The reported occasions include an assault of seven in Garsen, Tana River where the police officers providing security at the Garsen High School constituency tallying centre are alleged to have assaulted Goricha Jarso Abarabo and six others.
The second incident is the shooting and serious injury of Mohamed Ahmed Qanyare and Abdikeyr Mohamed Mohamud in Eldas, Wajir County.
Investigations have been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting that caused grievous harm, and unlawful wounding to the two on August 11, 2022, by police officers inside the tallying centre of Eldas Constituency in Eldas CDF Office, Wajir county.
An IPOA monitor was also injured in the process.
In Tiaty, Baringo county a youth who was among locals singing and celebrating the winning of an MCA from Kolowa ward at Chemolingot High school was assaulted and injured however he withdrew the complaint.
In the fourth incident, IPOA has commenced investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Amon Kibet allegedly by a suspected police officer which occurred on the night of 8/9/2022 at around 900 p.m. within Eldoret Town, Uasin Gishu County.
In Webuye East, Bungoma county, the authority has commenced investigations to establish circumstances surrounding the indecent assault of a special police officer and attempted rape.
Officers have also been lauded as there were no reported deaths occasioned by them during the monitoring.
The officers were highly prepared through the pre-election training that they undertook before the elections.
“The level of police preparedness in the 2022 general election was notably higher compared to the 2017 General election. These were various pieces of training and refreshers that the police officers underwent compared to the 2017 electioneering period where police actions resulted in the deaths of 27 people and 75 others injured. The 2022 electioneering period had reduced incidences of police misconduct documented,” the IPOA report read in part.
The partnership between the different stakeholders and the police notably led to a smooth running of activities.
