A mother and her four children have been admitted to the Lugari Station Hospital in Kakamega county after eating food that is said to have been poisoned by their neighbour – a boyfriend to the woman’s daughter.
Everlyne Ongachi, the mother of four children, said he boiled githeri (a mixture of maize and beans) and left it in her kitchen and went for a church service on Sunday, October 2, 2022.
Upon going back home, one of the family members rushed to the kitchen to fry the meal and serve it.
However, a few hours later, the whole family started complaining about abdominal pain and stomachache before they all started vomiting.
“I always put food in the kitchen for the children. Now when I came back, I was told that the children had some food left, so let’s eat it before cooking supper. The children fried the remaining githeri and served. As soon as we finished eating, the trouble began,” the woman narrated.
No help
The mother said efforts to seek help from neighbours were fruitless. They had to endure the pain all night until the morning when they were rescued and rushed to the hospital.
“We all vomited until no one could even make a phone call and ask for help,” the woman said.
“On the morning of Monday, October 3, my neighbour, who we always go to work with, came to pick me up to go to work. She was the one who saved us because he quickly made arrangements and rushed us to the hospital,” Ongachi added.
Githeri Poisoned by boyfriend
The mother of four says she suspects her daughter’s boyfriend is the one responsible for the heinous act.
She said a few days earlier the young man stormed into her home at night and started destroying her kitchen.
The woman said her daughter’s boyfriend was stopped by neighbours from completely destroying the building after she raised an alarm.
“I have been threatened several times. My girlfriend just had a baby with a boy next door. The other day, the young man came and caused havoc in my house and said that if he does not kill someone, he will do something that must be published in the media,” she lamented.
